3d graphics, bounding volumes


Axis-aligned bounding boxes (AABBs) are attractive bounding volumes, because they only require 6 numbers to store (min and max extent on each axis) and only up to 6 comparisons to test, no multiplication or addition/subtraction. They're also easy to compute: just take the max and min of all the vertices on each axis.

But there are downsides: unless you deliberately orient the contained mesh to optimize for a compact AABB, it's going to contain a lot of empty space. And once you change the axes, for example by transforming from model space to world space or camera space, you either need to switch to an oriented bounding box which is much harder to test against or you need to compute a new AABB, either directly from the old one, which is easy but will now have even more empty space, or by iterating through all the vertices again.

It gets even worse: we only need to compute the bounding volumes once, so it doesn't really matter how expensive that is. And when the volumes are arranged in a hierarchy, we can skip a lot of intersection tests entirely. And if a bounding volume contains a lot of empty space, we'll end up testing against more child volumes and triangles than we should really need to!

Scanline rasterization


I want to cull triangles as much as possible before sorting them, and sort them as much as possible before transforming them in order to minimize the amount of work and intermediate storage.

I only need to compute a single dot product to get the Y coordinate of a vertex in clip space. I have to do that for every vertex, but I only need to keep the lowest value per triangle, and only the integer scanline, so it's probably not worth caching for the final transformation. Though it is ⅓ of the work, so maybe it is? I suppose I could store it as the homogeneous coordinate temporarily.

This is not great from a locality perspective, though, because it requires accessing the vertices in random order at transformation time. We could use this trick just for bounding volumes, but we need all their transformed coordinates for culling anyway, which we want to do as early as possible.
