So, to date myself, you mean to say that #ActivityPub is like #email and #Bluesky protocol is like #Usenet ? Yes, I remember how expensive (in terms of bandwidth and storage) newservers were.
Super interesting and fair deep dive into bsky claim of decentralization from an #ActivityPub co-author (@cwebber).
https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/
The take away is #bsky will likely never be truly decentralized, but it can instead focus on its alternative goal of a "credible exit": making it possible to leave bsky with your identity.
Also really like the ideas on how to improve ActivityPub, e.g. content addressable ids.
Somebody with deep knowledge about #ActivityPub (the decentralized #Fediverse protocol that #Mastodon is also using) & the architecture of #Bluesky wrote a long-read about the wrong impression that Bluesky is a decentralized or #federated service.
In short: no, it's not. It's yet another centralized company that can - and according to our experience - will go south some day.
«There are multiple ways this could end up being a problem for the decentralized world; one irritating way is that people might believe there's an "easy decentralized way to do things" that Bluesky has discovered which isn't actually that at all, and another is that Bluesky could collapse at some point and that people might walk away with the impression of "oh well, we tried #decentralization and that didn't work... remember Bluesky?"»
So do spare you some extra work and maintain your social network in the Fediverse instead. It'll outlive the centralized alternatives.
And try to teach journalists!
Any advice on how to make a clean #ActivityPub exit for a #Wordpress federated blog so the domain can be reused? Last I checked, this wasn't implemented yet. Even a third-party script or tool. If Wordpress isn't going to develop this into their main plugin, they should at least create a standalone tool.

I have broadly observed that many tend to believe that ActivityPub-based Fediverse is associated with liberal or left-liberal political discourse. This perception may be due to user demographics and community norms or guidelines.
It is not fair to carry such a discernment in one's mind. The design and architecture of ActivityPub based Fediverse are politically neutral. However, the way it is implemented and used by different platforms and communities can reflect varying political ideologies. The Fediverse is a collection of interconnected social networking platforms that use ActivityPub, and these platforms can cater to diverse communities with different political beliefs and values.
It is important to re-emphasize that the Fediverse is a disparate ecosystem with a wide range of users and viewpoints. While there may be a prevalent perception of a liberal or left-liberal discourse, it does not mean that all users or instances within the Fediverse adhere to those ideologies.

@cwebber I'd like to hear more about AP follows the (Hewitt) Actor Model of Computation, if that's the one you mean. Just having message passing and an inbox and a thing called an "Actor" doesn't make the thing a unit of computation. Given the stated importance to AP, I don't see Hewitt's actor model mentioned in the spec or in any of the WG transcripts, so I'm curious what I'm missing.

Making progress on #Smithereen:
- Added the "saved photos" system album and the corresponding button in the photo viewer to save images there
- Added the ability to attach album photos to anything that things can be attached to — posts, comments, DMs
@cwebber@social.coop Blue Sky most certainly is not federated, since they're the gatekeeper who approves or disapproves, who can access their network.
They've already silenced 3 of the Fedi bridges.
By comparison, I could technically tell the Mastodon Dev Team to "F" off (I would not), but still connect to any other Fedi instance (server) running Mastodon. That is not the case with Blue Sky, as they act as gatekeeper.
