@srosset is presenting @activitypods at #FOSDEM. A link between #ActivityPub and #Solid for a neutral social network
@srosset :
Is the #fediverse really decentralized?
Not quite: one application= one account --> account fatigue.
So combining #ActivityPub and #Solid may be a solution.
First thing this morning at Social Web #BOF we have @Edent presenting their single file php #ActivityPub project that is entirely contained in one slide!

このブログの記事のURLをマストドン(mstdn.jp)で検索して表示させたら、文字化けがあった。原因は分からない。バグなのかな?
Opposite to the polls result I just muted bsky. brid.gy.
The concept of bridges is also a discussion in the #matrix ecosystem.
Either stuff is compatible or stuff is incompatible. It seems #BlueSky is incompatible with #ActivityPub. IMHO it is not the communities job to make the commercial web service BlueSky compatible with the not-for-profit ActivityPub.
Let me turn your good question into a great question that captures the very problem with the Fediverse and ActivityPub:
Is it advisable for more people to host their own content in the Fediverse?
The answer splits into arguments why it's not advisable.
Network viewpoint: ActivityPub does not scale. It's a naive fully decentralized network. So if a node fails, there's no fallback. Having more nodes does nothing for the resilience. Each node adds a communication overhead.
Cost viewpoint: Currently, media is duplicated between servers. This is expensive. It's also mostly pointless.
Social viewpoint: Each new node needs its own moderation. As most nodes are run by an administrator, this means creating the next feudal lord.
The presentation by @mala about user-defined timeline algorithms (BYOTA - Bring Tour Own Timeline Algorithm) was very interesting. I’m looking forward to trying his prototype. This could be useful
beyond #ActivityPub.
@bnewbold.net Imho two sessions scheduled at the exact time communicates to the world “pick one” not “both” or “we are cooperating”.
So if there are common objectives between #activitypub and #atproto, can we enumerate what they are? How would we go about that?
This is probably a dumb question but is it possible/advisable for more people to host their own content? Seems like instead of having giant servers where everyone’s stuff is stored we could all just host our own files and people connect to them? Grateful for any insight into the downsides of doing something like that (aside from having to learn how to run a server) #fediverse nub here #activitypub #pixelfed #loops #mastodon
