The Endgame For Us All
https://open.spotify.com/episode/0onzkffeY700ICYnIqW9Ny
No matter how you cut it, the endgame of what has become “Vampire Capitalism” is indentured consumers.
Live to work, work to consume – an endless cycle designed to service “shareholder value”.
It’s a disgusting system where morality only exists as long as it serves the gods of increasing profits. And if it’s not moral today, just hold on to your hats, because it will be normalized tomorrow.
Add this reporting out of Greece as yet another example of how big tech only cares about the bottom line, as if you needed another one. And of course Apple, Google, Microsoft, Netflix and other tech behemoths will be able to avoid any fallout because the company being accused of retaliating against union organisers, surveilling staff and even refusing bathroom breaks, is a contractor.
I mean, Teleperformance (apparently the largest call center operator in the world) presumably bid for the contract, so what else do they need to know?
“The normal salary [per month] would be around €1,329 ($1,376) , but with housing it’s €1,029 ($1,065) , and on top of that they charge electricity at four times what a local company would charge,” said Krasadakis. “This is a tool they use to put more pressure on them, because if they fire someone, or if they don’t renew their contract, on the first day, they can just say, OK, you have to be homeless now.”
He also claimed the workers aren’t allowed to receive visitors at their apartments, where they are surveilled by security.
“They have security passing by the apartments two to three times a day to make sure they don’t have visitors,” added Krasadakis.
Let’s not beat around the bush here, unless we find a way to bring back the implied societal contract between companies and the communities in which they operate, we are all destined to be sleeping in the ashes of said bush.
For those of you too young to remember, the sole purpose of companies and corporations wasn’t always profit at all costs.
Companies used to invest in communities, and in their employees. They used to create jobs, pay fair wages, and stimulate local economies through investments and commerce.
They were expected to operate ethically and consider the well-being of employees, customers, and the broader community.
That included supporting education, healthcare, and cultural or community initiatives.
They were expected to contribute to the tax base, which supports public services and infrastructure.
Instead they have flushed all that away in favour of monitoring how long it takes you to go to the bathroom, because if you’re pooping, you’re not generating revenue – not yet at least.
