Also, the changes Meta is making to Facebook's feed algorithm "will make it more likely to recommend extreme and polarizing content".

Here's an excellent Bluesky thread on that from Laura Edelson (Chief Technologist at the Civil Rights Division in the Department of Justice):

bsky.app/profile/whiskeyocelot

An excerpt:

"The return to an algorithm that drives more politics and more extreme rabbit holes is a return the Facebook of 2016-2020. This has some business upsides, by both cutting costs and juicing user engagement (aka, ad revenues). But it has very, very serious downsides for users and for communities.

Because the hate speech policies and the algorithmic changes that were rolled back this week were developed in response to very real offline violence, including genocide in Myanmar, that were fomented on Facebook. This is a plan to go back to that algorithm and those policies."

GEEKDOM.SOCIAL ADMIN NOTIFICATION

In light of the recent changes at Meta, I've decided to join the #Fedipact and block Threads. Sub-par moderation was one thing, active support of bigotry is one very different thing.

My decision is based on basic decency, but as an EU-based instance, there's also a legal angle that should not be ignored.

Hello, fellow mortals. Just moved from Mastodon.social following the #Threads #privacy policy changes. I found this instance using the #fedipact. I don't post much but I'm here to boost and favorite cool stuff. AMA if you want.

I guess the #fedipact should include defederating with mastodon.social and mastodon.online and all the other instances that will keep federating with threads

I will leave the poll open until Friday afternoon, but it's currently 20 - 1 in favour of blocking threads.net on oslo.town

If you want to cast your vote, go to oslo.town in your web browser (since not every app supports "announcements") and you'll see the 📣 icon at the top of your Home Feed.

Mastodon.social
Mastodon.cloud
Mstdn.social
Mastodon.online
Mastodon.world

Ces 5 instances totalisent environ 3 millions d'utilisateur·ice·s, dont plus de 2 millions rien que sur Mastodon.social.

Qu'est-ce qu'on peut faire en 2025 pour avancer ?

Content warning:FediPact, Meta, Threads, useful link

here's a quick reminder that fedipact.veganism.social/ exists if you want to see what instances limit or block Threads, whether you want to encourage your admins to block or look for an instance to be on that already blocks :hug_love:

Perciò, come "custode" di questo server, che normalmente adotta una politica di blocco abbastanza aggressiva, presi la decisione di adottare una posizione di neutralità, limitandomi a un semplice "silenziamento" di Threads invece della sospensione completa sull'onda dei tanti server aderenti al #FediPact.

The relevance of #fedipact - to not federate with Meta Threads - should've been obvious from the get-go. Between the endless #privacy violations, Cambridge Analytica, the Rohinga #hate campaign, and ... The list of Meta abominations matches Zuck's riches.

Yet even now, with Meta giving up all pretense and going hard right with "free hate speech", people like @Gargron dither. I'm baffled, and concerned. This will turn nasty, the longer it goes on.

"The Ministry of Empowerment", a great essay from @zephoria on Meta

zephoria.org/thoughts/archives

"Fuck you Facebook. That was the first thought I had when I woke up this morning. Followed by: What ministry is Mark Zuckerberg volunteering to manage for the dictators of the world? All I could think of is how Orwell’s Ministry of Love is about hate. So what are we creating here? The Ministry of Empowerment to ensure the oppression of the most vulnerable? Lovely. But maybe you, dear reader, have a better Ministry name for their new organizational identity?"

So if we're pretty much all defederating from #Threads, how do we feel about the kilogram.makeup server?
