Set up a small #friendica server yesterday (hosted - not self hosted!) Want to see if I can get a few family members to join, anyone done this? Any tips? Going to recommend #Fedilab as the main app. @apps

@gispyskov My own most recent Friendica experience is from the mid-2010s; I've only been using its various descendants ever since. But I'll forward your question to a bunch of Friendica veterans.

Mother fucking 2 year #lemmy cake day.

For me, lemmy was the actual start of the fediverse experience.

A reddit/forum style platform on the same protocol as Twitter style platforms that even kinda interacted with each other (first time seeing which was genuinely wonderful).

Since, I’ve always said the Fedi should do more group based things, and I stand by that. I even think Reddit/forum/group-based platforms are a better story on AP than microblogging and I’d wager they could stick around longer than the Twitter clones.

Either way, whenever I come back to the Fedi, I’m usually heading for lemmy / #threadiverse first. Reddit culture aside, I find it a much nicer way to find my people.

I hope all the best for the other platforms too… #kbin , #mbin , #piefed , #nodebb (and #friendica too)!

@holgervogt Yes, I hope that a few more organisations will run a new #Friendica or #Hubzilla server.
But outside the Fediverse, Mastodon is still the only known text software.

I'm already kinda sorta doing just that on my #Friendica server. It can filter messages to show only posts with pictures, with video or with audio; it can also filter on whether the account is an automated bot or a group like Lemmy's. You can even use "circles" as lists, and sort posts by "hotness" (a.k.a. the more recent posts are weighted by likes and comments, those with more of these appear first). Only problem is that you can't quite mix and match criteria yet. And it's made with PHP and MySQL, so it gets crowded fast on cheaper hardware like a N100 or a Raspberry Pi. And it's still missing support for voting for some reason.

I don't want to add yet another thing - do you know of any other site where people can simply ask questions and/or look at already answered questions (without needing another account)?

Some Fediverse server applications that have built-in support for groups/forums have their own support groups/forums which you can (and have to) join to ask for support for these specific applications.

Friendica: @Friendica Support
Hubzilla: @Hubzilla Support Forum (and various others which are practically inactive)
(streams): @Streams

I don't know of any such groups for the Fediverse in general. But then again, today's Fediverse is still absolutely Mastodon-centric, and Mastodon doesn't even know what a group is.

I’m wondering how #Friendica implements groups in a way that’s compatible with ActivityPub. It’s unclear from the documentation how activities are associated with groups. I’m guessing a similar scheme to the `allow_gid` fields in the Event entity is used to scope activities to specific groups?
