A main technical and economic difference to #matrix servers/clients:
The family of #deltachat apps uses #chatmail servers as ephemeral message transports that know nothing and forget everything: Servers don't store group metadata or cryptographic identities
and delete messages after download by default. In effect, a 30EUR/month #chatmail server with 10K's of active users hums along with 2% IO and CPU pressure, 1GB RAM and negligible disk usage. No Pro-version or Kybernetes needed to scale ;)

Contudo, pra evitar atrito inicial principalmente para leigos, o Signal já seria uma ótima alternativa.

@endofline Just in case anyone needs to know this (I meet a lot of XMPP-haters who last used it in year 2000 and think it never progressed) - #XMPP has a number of fairly usable end-to-end encryption protocols, including PGP and OMEMO. The latter is built on the same double ratchet algorithm as #Signal and #Matrix, and is supported by all major clients.
Sure, the UI/UX could be improved. It's FOSS, and doesn't have the double-edged sword of VC funding - patches/donations welcome!
@Miaourt I never trusted #matrix. Mainly because they mostly preferred fancy features over resource use.
I stay with #xmpp, even though it has big problems as well.
@daniel a big shoutout and thank you for #Conversations_im and #XMPP #Jabber in general. Personally, I love it, works super smoothly on my #grapheneos and by large I prefer it to #matrix

@etienne @silmathoron Yes I have actively used Matrix in the past, with the server running as a Docker container on a VPS. It was pretty awesome for the most part, and I even contributed some accessibility fixes to the Element client app on iOS. Was not aware of these latest shenanigans, quite unfortunate for sure. #Matrix is still an open protocol though, and you can use other server implementations such as #Dendrite. https://github.com/element-hq/dendrite
@laaspher Wenn die Verbindung zu Talk per TLS erfolgt, sind die Daten auf dem Transportweg verschlüsselt, korrekt. Trotzdem ist dies keine E2EE, denn theoretisch haben nicht nur die Kommunikations-Teilnehmer Zugriff auf die Inhalte (z.B. der Admin oder Provider).
E2EE gibt es dafür z.B. bei #Matrix oder #RocketChat, welche ebenfalls selbst gehostet werden können.
Talk unterstützt mittlerweile auch Federation, d.h. die Inhalte sind ggf. nicht nur auf die Nutzer auf der gleichen Instanz begrenzt.

Open source can be financially sustainable—it just gets super hard if one of your key goals is making your investors even richer. #Conversations_im is about the same age as #Matrix. I never took VC funding, and I’m doing fine.
