Seriously? Why is this not free and open source?
Users of nation-scale services don't deserve to use free and open source software?
How can them trust those services?
I can understand that they can charge for support helping companies or public agencies who want to deploy large instances, but it hurts to hide the software in a proprietary jail.

Nation-scale Matrix deployments will fail if built on the community version of Synapse. Huge deployments need a different architecture, which is what Synapse Pro delivers.

@fionafokus The involvement of VC was always one of the (many) reasons the #XMPP user community has been wary of #Matrix.
XMPP is still around, improving all the time, and backed by communities and non-VC-funded companies.
#ejabberd is freedom-respecting software and scalable enough WhatsApp, League of Legends, and for Nintendo Switch Push Notifications - dare I say even "nation-scale".
