Testing #IceShrimp was a success, so I'm retiring my test instance @paula and am using this as a permanent instance to continue using this #Misskey fork alongside my Mastodon accounts (main= @PaulaToThePeople)

What I like about Iceshrimp (compared to Mastodon):
* the follow button says "Follow request" if I can't follow immediately
* in the advanced interface I can have columns with widgets, so I can for example display notifications, trends and a timeline in one column
* column width can adapt to the screen size
* social and recommended timeline (social=home+local, recommended is all known public posts from servers the admin recommends
* I can edit the sidebar (hide add and rearrange elements, toggle between text+symbol or just symbol, ...)
* drive: I can upload files and e.g. set media captions and every time I post the same media it will have the caption and won't take up more space
* I can make local-only posts
* there is a refresh button, which is kinda nice, even though obviously I can use the browsers refresh button
* there is a beta function to prevent AI scraping
* admins/mods can decide to forward reports to other instances
* I don't need an email server, but set any email address as the one the instance sends messages from via SMTP

What I miss or dislike:
* I can't filter posts individually
* Some functions are a bit creepy (e.g. adding people you don't follow to lists and following words, not only hashtags)
* I don't think I'll get used to the way replies are displayed in timelines
* Iceshrimp doesn't yet know posting language
* Importing follows doesn't work if the server hasn't discovered the followed accounts yet (so I can't jumpstart federation on a new server)
* I can't moderate signups
* I can't manage roles, user permissions and promote users to admins

I think there should be an option to exclude all custom emojis in #Misskey antennas :mima_think:

(yeah i can use the exclude field but it can only go so far)

I'd really like to know if anyone knows how to recover lost drive images on a #Misskey instance without having to restore from backup (and thus lose recent posts).

Just replacing the contents of the /var/www/misskey/files folder from the backup does NOT seem to work.

Presumably it has to update the database to know about them or something?

Just been reminded that poor old Firefish is shutting down at the end of this year.

https://info.firefish.dev/notes/9xsukr38m3komd63

I was a big proponent of Firefish (formerly known as Calckey). I followed someone onto it out of curiosity and liked it so much I said goodbye to Mastodon without looking back.

It's where I met the lady who was to become my Fiancee and where our friendship blossomed into romance.

Calckey got big. Big accounts were pushing it, talking about it. The Re-Brand to Firefish happened to much fanfare: weeks and weeks of build-up - it was a hype train and a half! And then...it all went wrong.

Performance issues struck, and lingered. The flagship site could be down for days at a time. Looking into this later I learned that it stemmed from the Misskey v12 codebase simply not being engineered to scale at all well with all the new users piling in. All the back-end stuff folks tried was patching a leaky boat with tape. And then things got Fedi-Meta-Horrible when the lead dev was accused of harassment and faking screenshots and other 'crimes' too tiresome to recount. (Personal note: I didn't believe any of it). Ice-shrimp emerged as a reaction to all of this (Ice-shrimp.js had the same fundamental engineering problems).

Other forks arrived in due course, Sharkey and now Cherrypick but Firefish was the one that blazed the trail of Misskey in the West, that for a brief, wonderful moment threatened to break the Mastodon monopoly by suggesting a brighter, more fun future for the Fedi.

I'm going to miss it. I already do miss it, having moved on long since. But you never forget your first.

The logo will always be cute, though.
