Make Your Own CDN With NetBSD

At this moment, anyone connecting to my blog via IPv6 - it-notes.dragas.net - will actually be accessing a Raspberry Pi Zero W running NetBSD in read-only mode, which acts as a caching node just like the other nodes in my self-made CDN – and it
works perfectly. Unplugging and replugging won't cause any harm to the filesystem.

More about it in the post that will be published Tuesday morning on my blog :-)

Now I’m having a doubt: the blog post will talk about the NetBSD setup that will serve the blog itself. Recursion? 😆

I've scheduled the post about and for tonight (also to see if my script based on at and for cache cleanup works well - I've tested it already, but I prefer a real-world test).
I'll announce it on social media in the morning.

I've just finished reviewing the post, which will be published on Monday instead.

NetBSD deserves more attention, and I hope this post will help boost its usage and visibility.

Stay tuned!

Drafting my next blog post:

"The internet today relies TOO MUCH on just a few big players. When one of them stops working, half the world is impacted because too many services, in my opinion, depend on them.
“Too big to fail,” some might say.
“Single Point of Failure,” I respond."

Google has this huge New button as if they want New to be their brand, as though part of the process of making something must be giving all your data to Google. Besides this button they have docs.new sheets.new and slides.new :/

"In this unit, you will create a new project that is stored online in GitHub and connected to Netlify."

Why? You're a Static Site Generator - by the end of the tutorial, I know you'll give me a directory of files to put on my web server. Why do we always have to rely on external services? To be clear, in this context, I have nothing against GitHub or Netlify, but why do we always have to "promote" the idea of putting our data on other people's services?

As the years go by, I remain convinced that the world needs to refocus on the importance of keeping control of our own data.

And I am psychologically preparing for the call I will have in a few minutes, where interns will explain to me that the future is putting everything in the big tech cloud.

Even a static site generated by an SSG.

Just received one of those phone calls that makes me both sad and angry. A long-time client is migrating their resources to the "cloud" because "internal infrastructure (leased from a provider, not in their offices) is no longer sustainable." They believe they can solve all issues of updates, security, and implementation by outsourcing everything to closed services, cloud, or SaaS, and reducing investment in personnel. A few interns, cloud or SaaS services, and business is "worry-free."

I warned them to keep an off-site copy of their data, have a disaster recovery plan ready, and remember that their clients tend to cause damage and delete data, and their developers tend to break websites during updates. But all of this is underestimated because "the cloud is the solution."

Unfortunately, they've been swayed by the enticing advertisements from companies that promise everything without worries. Sadly, I know they'll get hurt, and it makes me sad, but there's not much I can do at this point.

It’s been a freeing week:

✅ Installed a NextCloud instance on my web server and moved all my files off Google Drive and OneDrive.

✅ Installed Ubuntu on my rectory PC, wiping out Windows.

✅ Experimented with LibreOffice and found it works for my needs.

✅ Installed myTinyTodo on my web server to keep track of tasks and lists.

Add that to my recent installation of a mastodon instance, a Matrix instance, and moving to Bluesky and PixelFed, it’s a solid start.

For this , I want to thank everyone who still wants to own their data. Those who aren't swayed by seemingly valid and effective technical solutions designed solely to entrap. To those who don't believe in the flashy pages created by web giants that promise better results than others and sometimes sabotage competitors to create this illusion. Or embrace and extinguish the competition.

When all our data and activities are chained to the servers and infrastructures of a few entities, what will we truly own?
