40 signals. And, Google has always explained to align those signals the best you can. i.e. Don't send weird canonical signals to Google. By aligning those signals, you have a greater chance of Google selecting the correct url as the canonical.
Allan also had an interesting note that one criteria, "Redirect to shorter" was recently nuked. Allan noticed some problems when Google was canonicalizing https to http when it shouldn't due to that criteria.
