Ending my Twitter Era
Finally deleted my Twitter account after confirming my archive was in a good state.
I haven’t tweeted actively since November 2022, when I made my profile private; all my posting energy is over on Mastodon or in other channels.
I had been dipping in read-only to search for things occasionally, either when trying to find out about Seattle local happenings or checking on public feedback about my work. There was less and less of that as it seemed like infosec Twitter mostly raptured over to Mastodon en masse as well, so I was retweeting work posts less and less over the past year. (My worksona remains active on LinkedIn, of course.)
I’ve found much of the community I had on Twitter (tech podcasts, retrocomputing, assorted other nerdy interests) is mostly present on Mastodon where I can manage my feed and lists exactly as I want. I have my username parked on Threads and Bluesky, and I crosspost this blog there, but I don’t really use them actively.
In the end deleting my Twitter still feels like a loss, an end, and it’s extra annoying that a random billionaire was in a position to buy it and ruin it. I guess almost 15 years from early 2008 to late 2022 was a good run using a strange and terrible hellsite of a third place.
In addition to my primary account I have three joke accounts I’m waiting on the archive for; a parked account and a joke account that seem to have been deleted for inactivity at some point; a family account we previously deleted; and a parked account I just deleted.
